In the middle of December we were able to finish off the framing at Stephen Street. It had only taken a couple of weeks to frame the first two floors, but the Albany Habitat for Humanity was without a 'Construction Manager' for several months and there were delays in getting approval (and then ordering) the roof trusses (they are about eighteen inches higher than usual to allow for roof decorations that are common in this historical neighborhood). The two walls which were supporting the rafters had bowed out. Here they are pulling the walls together with a 'come along'. Stephen Street Build, Southend Albany, NY. =0=

I made a short video of them putting up a brace. It was cold and everyone was dressed warmly (which makes it hard to identify who was who in the pictures). I also broke out the manual to my camera and learned how to take timer pictures (real easy if you know what the little icons stand for). I used the timer to take this picture of my new snowshoes from Ocean State Job Lot, a bargain at $35. They were a Christmas / Birthday present from my mom. Snowshoes. =0=

There was a two week break over the holidays as Frank and Al were on vacation. Then we finished putting up the OSB around the roof trusses as well as adding the 'lookouts' just beyond the trusses under the roof. We still need to wrap the house in Tyvek and put on the roof shingles, but the interior work should be much warmer. Hopefully there will be warm enough weather to finish up the exterior so that the interior work can proceed. Stephen Street Build, Southend Albany, NY. =0=

In early December there was another meetup.com hike, a Snowshoe Hike in Merck Forest and Farmland Center in Rupert, VT. I used my Droid to record the route which is shown above. We started out hiking in our boots along the roads that had been plowed. The forest and farm are a not for profit. They had horses (shown here) as well as a network of plastic pipes to collect maple sap from the trees. They only get about a half gallon from each tree and it is reduced about 40 to 1. I wondered about the economics of a network of pipes instead of just collecting the sap a couple of times a year. Above the electric fence is one of those pipes.
